The lock is a tried and tested way of holding the plate. (from the Model 1 up and is still on new systems)
As long as you have your saftey locking screw in then it can only slide onto this.
(The saftey screw is on your right towards the back of the topstage - with the camera facing away from you - if you do not have one then you can be paranoid - it is a fairly standard screw from any hardware store)
You can put your mind at ease - Without a camera! put your dovetail plate into the topstage and do not lock it - but do up your saftey screw- and tip the the sled up and down and you will see it has a stop front and back - if not then you can be paranoid

Yes! I fell the same when check the drop Time.
Is only because I'm a Paranoid too
When I do that, My left hand is always near to the "hand of camera" following the camera without touch it.
