Thought maybe someone might have some insight on a preston handset mounted monitor. Starting an all-handheld job soon, and focus will be 100% wireless. I need a small (can be really small) monitor for cues, etc. that will mount on the hand unit. I have an idea for the mounting bracketry, but obviously the monitor will have to run on 9v or AA batts to keep weight and size down. Is that possible, for example, with a 4" transvideo monitor? Maybe there are some small monitors out there that I don't know about?

I got a feeling that the moderators are gonna knock one of these topics off so I'll reply here, where I think they'll leave it.

I have used a wristwatch style tv and just velcroed it to the focus transmitter (bartech or preston) with great success. They are tiny and extremely light, but there are a few downsides.

For wide shots it is sometimes difficult from the monitor to tell what you are looking at (however they are wide shots and focus/timing are not as big of an issue, also from experience you can pretty much tell what they are looking at by where the camera is pointed) also they have an internal battery so you cannot just change the batteries you must charge it. I bought two so the assistant can just charge one as the other is being used. They are also a bit hard to find you can't get these at any retailer I'm aware of.

here is a link to a current ebay auction they seem to always be there:

First of all please use your full real first and last name.

Second: Multiple posts of the same Question in different categories will be deleted, if you are unsure of the topic, post in the General discussion and it will be moved accordingly. Trying to keep the forum nice and tight so that in future people can find stuff easier/faster.

Are you looking for a solution for the Hand Unit 2 or 3. For the HU2 please check: http://www.cinewidgets.com/ under products. (See picture below). So you can attach the little 3" TFT CASIO, RCA, INNOVISION handheld TV sets that Radio Shack used to sell. They are powered by 4 AA batteries. Check the web:

For the Hand Unit 3...

I don't think that anyone has made a bracket or found a solution for it yet. I'm getting a custom monitor/receiver build. 3.5" TFT LCD that will attach above the Focus Wheel and beside the LCD readout, powered of the Zoom Lemo port from the back. Only one battery (Sony M style lithium) to change. In the moment it's an one off. (I'll post pictures once I get it).

Good Luck,

Erwin

Hey Josh,

Interesting unit... Can you actually see anything on such a small monitor? How is the Picture Quality / Range?
Mine is going to be quite a little more expensive then the $140.- bucks...

Later,

Erwin

Well for the reason's you want a monitor for the assistant it's helpful. It's a tiny image to be sure but I find that most assistants like it. Not sure of the range but your assistant is almost never too far away (or at least shouldn't be unless the shot or safety dictates it) The quality of the image is quite good probably due to the fact that it is so small even a low resolution would look good.

OK, I think I'm legal now (sorry about the confusion!). I think I'm going to using this monitor with the single channel hand unit, so I guess I'll have to come up with something that will accept one of the Casio or clone monitors...Don't know what the single ch. handset has for bracketry mounting areas...

Hi Art,

Welcome to the Forum.

I had a talk with Howard Preston in the past about that, The Focus/Iris unit does not have a mounting point (The little silver square with the thread on the back of the full size hand Unit for the Zoom bracket). May be easier to ask Howard to add one of those to your Focus/Iris Unit... Give him a call. It's worth a try...

And all the other parts are of the shelf, just an idea.

Good Luck and let us know,

Erwin

Hi Erwin,

I just bought the Cinewidgets monitor bracket for my HU III. It works just fine. The only difference is, that the monitor now sits above the handwheel.

Best,

Jens

All my little monitors bit the dust or grew legs...

I want something that works with the HU-3 only and is powered of the Handunit, one battery change at the time.

(Below a picture of my old HU-2 set up with monitor and light...)
