Hi all;

I see on Facebook we have lost another of the original greats of Steadicam, Derrick Whitehouse.

Derrick worked at Cinema Products in the early days of Steadicam; I'm sure made them, repaired them and probably was responsible for many parts and certainly helped get it all going.

After he left CP he bought a lot of their old inventory and also was a reseller of rigs for operators and those he owned.

Nice man and always willing to help with a question or a part.

He was a big help to us all over the decades.

RIP Derrick.

Thanks Janice for posting this. I purchased my first steadicam from Mr. Whitehouse in 1992 sight unseen from an ad I saw in the classified section of American Cinematographer. He was the original marketplace for used steadicam equipment, and I bought and sold many things from him through the years. I always enjoyed going to his shop north of Thousand Oaks and seeing all of the cool bits of history (even then) lying about. Inevitably I'd end up staying and talking to Derrick for a long time about other operators or this and that, and only leave when he got a call or I'd get a page (that dates things). He was a lovely man who helped many operators from around the world get into steadicam long before things like the Steadicam Forum existed. Thanks again Janice - he will be missed by those of us who knew him over the years.

Bought my shark fin/Sony TU-1041 from him back around ~2002. A very nice gentlemen to a very doe eyed operator. He was very helpful to me over the years for little odd and end bits from his collections.

I don't troll crackbook (facebook) anymore so thank you Miss Janice for posting this. Sad indeed and prayers to his close friends and family.

Thanks for posting Janice; I was unaware of Derrick's passing.

Like Brooks, I bought my first rig from "Whitehouse Audio Visual" back in 1994 but from a classified in the SOA news letter.  Pre-Internet (as we know it now - AOL was starting up, I think) it was a lot harder to find equipment!

Such a knowledgable gentleman and a HUGE help to our community.  May he rest in peace.

I'm so sad to hear this.... .!!! I met derrick early in the 90's after did my workshop in Italy in 1989 with GB and Nicola Pecorini... He was a nice and very interresting guy. The CP memory...he helped me to buying III A parts. And the first time I met him in L.A I have no more money to buy all the parts I needed, he answered me << no problem, when you come back to France you send the money by wire transfer!!!!>>
He was always there when I have questions...
Remembered he gave me a CP pin's for souvenir...
He sent me postcards from vacacions...
Derrick was a respectable gentleman and friend...
Miss you Derrick...

awww Man!!!. This is so sad!!!. I knew him well, went to his house several times and bought and sold stuff from/to him many times since the mid 90's. He and his wife sure liked to take long cruises all over the world. He will be missed!!!.  This is a total bummer to have found out.

I worked with Derrick for many years at CP. Derrick would send me some really sick and funny jokes. He will be sorely missed.

Sad to hear this news, even as late as I am reading about it.  Even though I have never met Derrick in person, he sold me my first rig, an EFP, "way back" in 2007.  He has been a big contributor to our careers, and mine especially.  Rest in peace.
