Want to use this as a clamshell / directors monitor.

Any input from people with hands-on experience would be much appreciated.

I purchased the SBL version recently.

In full sun I haven't needed to use the provided hoodman. Currently using it in very low light situations, if you play around with the colour space settings (linear, etc), it can pull detail out of the dark areas of the picture where the other brand monitors on set are failing.

Excellent & simple layout, actual physical buttons that work properly rather than touchscreen, robust build quality and attention to detail. I would say that at 540 lines of resolution the image quality is better than other 800 lines monitor.

Also the accessories are worth looking into.

Not cheap but you get what you pay for.... I also have the StarliteHD which is also a great monitor (serves a different purpose).

bummer but not a deal-breaker. perhaps a future firmware upgrade would make it possible. hopefully.

The 7" RainbowHD SBL records still frames only, the 5" StarliteHD records still & video.  Some body-rig operators now put the 5" as a 2nd monitor on the top of the batteries as a recorder, but also for framing backward shots.

On the 7", the default setting is REC709, but I highly recommend to set the monitor to LINEAR instead.   It delivers much more details in the blacks and mid-tones.

Thanks!

Jens,

Thanks for the picture.  This 7" RainbowHD (450 Nits) is not the SuperBright version and it holds up very well next to the other brand 1000 Nits!

Not to mention the superior coating that is obvious on this photo.

This 7" RainbowHD list price is $1900 shipping from California.
