Hi guys, How much does this upgrade cost....if you can upgrade it from the original Zephyr ?,   and how does it work with Traix for instance in getting tally and return ??

Thanks, Darren

In regards to tally and return, you'd take the return from one of the video outs on the camera, and for tally, I believe it's only wired to take a photoresistor input, but if I'm wrong, it may also be able to take a direct feed if you have the right assortment of cables to get the tally signal from the different sorts of cameras one will encounter.

Best,
Alex

Cost: check with Tiffen but it used to be in the neighborhood of $1000, and it includes an upgrade of your sled's connectors and wiring. Alex is right that it's a photoresistor input. Tape it to the camera's tally light.

You can always ask Terry West to do custom wiring.

Unfortunately I live in Australia and Terry West is a bit too far for me Alan. If you know of a person with the Terry West talents in Australia I would love to talk to them.

Also does anyone use short length fibre cables on portable studio/OB cameras for easier access? As I figure it would be easier to tape the fibre extender cable once and connect and disconnect from the back of the vest .....does that make sence?

Hey DMAC!

Rob Jones at Lemac may be able to help out with this one. He's been trained at Tiffen, and considering the amount of Zephyr's here, I'm sure he'd know what's going on. If you need a custom cable guy, similar to Terry, I've got a great guy I can put you in touch with in Melb.

In regards to the fibre jumper... I have a couple of old triax ones which have got me out of trouble in the past. Haven't got a fibre one as yet though I probably should!. There was another thread recently talking about them. If you end up ordering one from the states, let me know and I'll grab one as well!

Hey James,

Yeah I've spoken to Rob, but I'm just seeing who else is out there, like I've heard there is a guy in Western Sydney who fixes arms. Don't know weather to upgrade to a system to carry the extra 5 kg (XDCAM and LINK)  for football etc.... or just stay with the Zephyr and restrict it to a cabled Sony 1500 etc...hence the fiber idea?

I know some of the other guys are thinking of getting a short fiber too, so I'll keep you in the loop mate.

Also thanks Mark !!  That's the sort of info I was wondering. I guess my biggest task is to sort out what bits of the tally system i need to get made up, and who makes them?

If you have Tiffen to an upgrade, everything you need is included (as long as your camera is receiving a tally signal from the control room). The tally upgrade consists of adding a tally connector on the topstage, as well as an additional power lemo, and perhaps rewiring the sled (I'm not sure but I think that they replace the wiring loom). They provide a wire with a photocell receptor, and a "talent tally" LED to tape to the lens shade or prompter, in case the viewfinder is removed or obscured. On the bottom, they wire tally into the 8-pin hirose video/power connector, and replace the stock cable with a new cable that has a place to plug in a tally LED that is taped or velcroed to your monitor.

It is possible, I'm sure, for someone else to custom wire something similar, but Tiffen's solution works and is well thought-out.

Was wondering about the same thing here in germany.

First contact that comes to mind would be Betz.

And does anyone have some infos where I can get those "hyperflex" Triax. The guys from the broadcast van told me, the easiest way would be to get this hyperflex triax with a fischer 1051 connector, so they can plug me with their triax on the back of my vest. Who makes them here in germany and how much is the price??

Hi Stefan,

I have come across a few hyperflex triax jumpers at TV-Stations in Munich, but enver bought any.

My suggestion is to ask the Betz guys for this as well, they might know. If they don't have an answer,

let me know and I'll ask for you next time I'm at the Studio where they have one :)
