If anyone gets an email from someone calling themself "Danny Park" or something similar asking for a quote and equipment list with prices for an "Unknown Project", please beware it's an attempted scam.

I got the same email from this guy and a copy of the operator's equipment list so I called the operator.

Here's the response I emailed:

Hi Danny,

I just called the operator whose equipment list you sent out.

It was very unprofessional for you to send another operators equipment list out especially with serial numbers. Maybe you're just doing what someone told you to do; if so, feel free to pass this on.

Second, you need to pay your operator the money owed. Again, completely unprofessional.

Finally, regarding the need for three quotes, Sony and all the other studios have had ample experience hiring Steadicam operators and their gear and should easily have other reference to what has been valued and paid in the past. We all charge the same rates!

Steadicam operators are colleagues not competitors, we're brothers and sisters, and yes we all communicate with each other even if we don't know each other directly.

Respectfully,

Robert Starling

He wrote back and apologized saying "lesson learned". Hopefully so!

I'm not sure he learned his lesson because "Danny Park" emailed me the same equipment list from our fellow operator just minutes ago. (I wonder how many people he emailed this list to) He said he needed my information for his "accounting department", so I asked him to provide the name, address and phone number of the company he works for and he replied back "please disregard"

I just went through this drill with Disney. My show is pretty unique so I had to bend over pretty far to make it happen. I will gladly discuss the details privately. They ask for three competitive bids so I passed along the most expensive from the list on the steadicam operators list. If you need to do the same, DO NOT use my name, my deal is not applicable for day playing or even a multiple week season.
