I've always used AB-Gold mount. Typically it seems like rental houses carry those rather than V-mount.
But my question is what you you guys as Steadicam Ops typically run into using? I see a lot of sleds in the market place being sold that are V-mount and it just got me curious because Every rental house I've rented from ((Able Cine, Adorama, (ID) Illumination Dynamics,)) all seem to rent out Gold-Mount for Alexa's, Amira's, REDs.

gold mount seems to be the standard, but plenty of people roll V mount as well.  I am sure people will correct me if I am wrong, but i thought it was kinda an east coast/west coast thing?  A lot of people have substantial investment into V mount with sony/other cameras and so while gold mount seems to vibrate less and be a more ideal connection, they stick with what they got.  I know I went V mount on my sled for that reason alone, otherwise I would have gone AB.

Hi Hudson

I prefere gold mount.

If you use v mount and you are working in low mode, the bateries can move down and turn off the camera or accesories that you are powering. That dont happens with gold mount.

Anyway, I have V mount-Gold mount adapters in case I need to use it.

Thanks for posting this one. I was just thinking to ask the same thing of the forum.

I think I like AB mount better myself. While both work just fine in general, AB seems more secure because you have to be more deliberate to release it by sliding out sideways instead of front to back.

I'm planning to switch my (new to me!) V-mount Zephyr sled to AB for this reason, but will probably keep the V-mount plate as backup or get an AB to V-mount adapter in case cam rents V instead of AB.

A lot of guys use AB and I definitely have run into v locks sliding out. Good Batteries are good batteries at the end of the day and it's mostly preference. I've always used v lock because of whatever mount option was on the sled I purchased, and batteries I had on deck.

I've had a V Mount release and fall off while in low mode. Only had to happen once for me to never trust that mount again. It's just not worth the risk of it sliding off and breaking or worse, falling onto the camera or lens and damaging something far more expensive that the battery itself.

I've had AC's mis mount my Gold Mounts plenty, with that single tab not sliding into the slot, but that just ends up being super difficult to remove later and messing up my balance, not falling off.

 Just my opinion and experience.

Rental houses around here offer your choice.  But remember, they carry what people ask for, it has nothing to do with relative quality (or videotape rental stores would have had Betacam rather than VHS).

I have been using both for years.  Neither has a clear advantage over the other, but AB has a certain amount of snob appeal, simply because consumer equipment never used anything that looked like it.
